WordPress Tip #1: How to Create Previews with Read More Links

Uncategorized

Difficulty Level: Easy

Recently a Twitter friend was having trouble with the home page of his blog. It was filled with full length blog posts, each taking up a lot of space, and making it difficult to browse. He felt this was too much for his readers. A preview of his post with a “Continue Reading” link at the bottom would be better, but he didn’t know how to create one.

Fortunately, the solution to his problem is super simple, and I’d like to share it with you guys:

First, login to WordPress via your admin account and go to the post you want to edit. Open up your editing window (you can do this by clicking on the name of the post). Click on the spot in your post where you want to put the  “Read More” link. Make sure the cursor is bliking in that spot. Is it? Great! Believe it or not, you’re already 50% of the way there.

Next, check out the row of buttons above your editing window. In it you’ll see a button portraying two rectangles and a dashed line between them. I’ve circle it in the image below. That button is called the “Insert More Tag.” When you click it, it’ll do exactly what it says and insert the “more” link into your post wherever your curser is blinking.

That’s it!

When you now check out your home page you’ll see that the post is a preview with a “Read More” link. You can use this technique on every other post to create previews of the exact length of your choosing. 🙂

Hope that helps!
